The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
