Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites

Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from earlier films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he got the news from the original writer.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fans

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.

"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they exist as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The chance of a self-referential narrative, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.

Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
