Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
