Long-Forgotten Johann Sebastian Bach Works Played for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years
Newly discovered organ compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach have been revealed and executed in the European nation for the initial occasion in 320 years.
Germany's Cultural Affairs Minister the cultural official labeled the finding of the two pieces a "significant occasion for the world of music".
They initially attracted notice of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was documenting the composer's papers at the Royal Library of Belgium.
The organ pieces - the Chaconne in D minor and G minor composition - were undated and unsigned. The scholar spent the next 30 years working to confirm the authorship of the pieces.
Historic Performance
They were played at the St Thomas Church in the eastern German municipality, where the composer is interred and where he worked as a church musician for twenty-seven years.
The two pieces were executed by Dutch musician Ton Koopman, who said he was proud to be able to perform them for the initial performance in three hundred twenty years.
He said the compositions were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "a great asset for contemporary organ players, as they are also appropriate for more compact instruments".
Historical Significance
They are thought to have been created during Bach's formative years, when he was working as an organ teacher in the community of the Thuringian town in Thuringia.
The scholar, who is now the head of the Bach research center in the city, said they exhibited several features unique to the artist.
"In terms of style, the compositions also feature characteristics that can be identified in the composer's creations from that time, but not in those of different artists," he said.
They are considered to have been recorded in 1705 by a student of Bach, Salomon Günther John.
At a revealing of the works, the researcher said he was "99.99% sure that Bach had created the two compositions" and they have now been incorporated into the official catalogue of his works.
