The pre-Ashes verbal sparring is escalating further, with ex-England paceman Broad declaring that the English side will face "arguably the weakest Aussie squad since 2010" on tour this winter.

David Warner's Confident Forecast Answered by Skepticism

The former England bowler's claim was in response to David Warner – an Ashes foe of Broad’s – forecasting a clean sweep for the home side. "Should the skipper [Pat Cummins] be absent, they could perhaps snatch a single victory," Warner commented.

The Aussies remain undefeated in a Ashes match on home soil after England's series win in 2010-11. The subsequent 5-0 whitewash in the following series – following seven defeats in their last nine matches – was followed by 4-0 series victories in 2017-18 and 2021-22.

Team Uncertainty and Injury Concerns for Australia

However, the top-ranked Test side, who have lost only one of their past 13 bilateral series, enter the upcoming assignment with uncertainty over the composition of their batting lineup and the fitness of Pat Cummins, who is unlikely to feature in the opening match at the Perth stadium because of a back issue.

"It's extremely challenging to win in Australia as an England side, or any side," said Broad on his podcast. "The Australians are massive favourites."

"Australia are under the greatest expectations because they’re anticipated to prevail, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got doubts over their squad and question marks over their captain’s fitness. You wouldn’t be outlandish in believing – this isn't merely a view, it’s a fact – it’s probably the worst Australian team since the 2010 era. And it’s the best England squad in over a decade. So those things point towards the fact that it’s going to be a thrilling contest."

Parallel to 2010-11 Tour

"The Australians have remained highly stable for a long period of time that you just knew who would open the batting, who was going to bat, which bowlers were available, and they lack that certainty now. It’s very much a comparable scenario to the 2010-11 period when England traveled and emerged victorious. The reality is Australia generally have to be bad to be defeated at home and England must excel. England have a great chance of performing exceptionally and the Australians face a real possibility of underperforming."

Team Decision for England

A major issue for England remains their choice at the number three position, with Ollie Pope and Bethell contesting the spot. Cook, whose 766 runs paved the way for the tourists’ series win over a decade past, thinks it would be "strange" for Stokes' team to move away from Ollie Pope, who has been a regular at number three for the past three seasons.

"I would bat Ollie Pope at three," said Cook. "In my view it’s a straightforward decision. You’ve got someone who’s been involved in this preparation for three or four years. He’s captained the side, he has delivered some extraordinary innings for the national side and he’s a hundred-maker. He understands how to make big scores in the domestic game. If you get rid of him now, I think that changes the whole dynamic of the foundation they've established over the last few years."

Although praising Jacob Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook said: "It would be a major risk [to pick him] because should it fail what is the fallback option, a player you recently discarded? They have committed heavily in players such as Ollie Pope and [Crawley that it would seem highly odd to change it now."

Captaincy Shift and Commentary Team

Ollie Pope has been succeeded by Brook as England’s vice-captain but, according to Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey right-hander.

"The management has acted decisively on that, thinking if there is an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Harry Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and everyone has seen that he appears a natural fit. This will take the pressure off. I don’t think undermine him. I’m sure it will have disappointed him because whenever you're removed from a leadership thing it isn't perfect, but I doubt it diminishes his standing."

Cook will be in Australia as part of the broadcast team of the Ashes, and will be joined by fellow Ashes winners Steven Finn and Graeme Swann as on-the-ground pundits. The channel will offer a dedicated commentary stream but will use a mixed approach, with commentators Alastair Eykyn and Rob Hatch to work off-site in the United Kingdom, while the trio provide co-commentary from Australia. Ebony Rainford-Brent is also part of the commentary team working off-site, with the on-ground coverage to be presented by Becky Ives.
