Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Leader.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly focused on promises to address increasing crime and significantly curb immigration.
He repeatedly cited foreigners, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face deportation.
His plans included U.S.-style measures such as building holding facilities, barriers, electric fences, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.
Within a Continental Wave
Several analysts see Kast's win as aligning with a broader right-wing wave in South America, following this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits also view it as a extension of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his clear electoral victory, Kast will not hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This political landscape may complicate his agenda, such as a vow to cut public spending by billions within 18 months—a measure for which he has yet to detailed specifics.
"There are many questions about what a Kast presidency will be that remain unclear because he has not detailed his methods for implement them," said a political science professor.
The analyst stated, "Regarding economic policy, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts typical of the right. But where there is far less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the campaign."
