Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Series Legacy
The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
