India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city showed an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold set by the WHO.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, representing 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Fireworks Restrictions and New Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as winter approaches.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership approached the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities approved the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi recorded air quality peaking around the night hours to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming declining air quality in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.

Various Pollution Contributors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing hazardous smog that becomes contained over the capital as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing ten thousand untimely mortalities annually in Delhi.
