EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
