Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the south-west.

Broad Extreme Heat Warnings Across Multiple States

These conditions follow recent fires in another state, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been issued for the coming days in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure shifts to the east, delivering intense heat to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry land and relentless high temperatures presents a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Global Weather Extremes Cause Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after powerful gusts compromised the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down power lines. The stormy weather also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Severe damage to power systems is anticipated to cause further problems as utility companies scramble to restore power to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Mist Covers Sunny Area

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunshine has endured one of its grayest and foggiest periods on record. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by unprecedented fall rainfall that left the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Destination

Turning to another country, a powerful storm has brought heavy rain, strong gales and even snow to a group of islands – weather many would not connect with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unheard of at elevated areas, the storm delivered some of the heaviest snow depths since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its closure.
